Luca Lucini’s “3 Metri Sopra il Cielo” follows three friends as they take a family holiday on a remote island off the coast of Sicily. So perfect. I have seen this film 3 times in the last 2 weeks and will see it again on Weds. This film won the Golden Camera at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival and was shortlisted at the 2016 Academy Awards. It is about the days leading up to the holiday as the friends discuss whether they will get on with the family they are going to stay with and their partners. It is the day before the holiday when they arrive at the island. They see that there is a light in the water and they can hear music coming from the other side of the island. The next day they swim over to the island and see the 3-metre high statue of a woman. She is covered in seaweed and there are other female statues, giving the island the nickname of “Il Gorgone”. They look around and see that there is a post-war building and a medieval castle. They find evidence of life on the island thousands of years ago and they also find the remains of a 14th century villa. The next day they visit the villa and one of the friends becomes scared and runs away. When she returns later she tries to jump into the pool of water that has come from the cracks on the floor of the villa, but she falls in and does not resurface. After this, the film slows down a bit as the friends and their families get
